Merry Christmas & Thank You! posted: December 7, 2009
Catholic Charities would like to thank all of the individuals, families, businesses, schools and churches that are helping us to collect Christmas gifts for our poor and vulnerable clients.
We have had an overwhelming response from our community, and as a result, all of our needy families and individuals have been adopted for Christmas this year. Because of the volume of gifts we are set to receive this Christmas season, we have closed our Christmas adoption program for the year. We will not be able to accommodate any new community members hoping to adopt families for Christmas 2009.
But remember that a monetary donation to Catholic Charities can help those in need year-round, and that the needs do not end after the holiday season. DONATE TODAY!
Thank you for your generosity and we hope that you will be open to adopting our client families next year and throughout the year.

Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Statement on Health Care Reform posted: October 26, 2009
The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops recognizes the need to reform access to health care in the United States. The Catholic Church has been and continues to be an advocate for health care reform that provides medical care for all in an accessible and affordable manner.
According to church teaching, health care is not merely a privilege, but a basic human right. In Pacem in Terris, Pope John XXIII stated that “rights are universal and inviolable, and therefore altogether inalienable.”
These include, but are not limited to, the “right to medical care,” and “to be looked after in the event of ill health.” The New Testament Scriptures further reveal an apostolic duty, commanded by Jesus, to heal the sick while proclaiming the Gospel (MT 10: 7-8).
For centuries, Catholic hospitals have served and ministered to the sick and the dying. Other Catholic institutions have welcomed and served the elderly, handicapped, expectant mothers, newborns, and others with physical, emotional or spiritual needs. T
his is an important expression of our respect for the innate dignity that lies within every human being, regardless of race, nationality, religion, political opinion, or social class.
This respect for life and dignity directs us to urge congress to support reforms that: - Exclude public health care monies for abortion; - Prohibit any form of euthanasia; - Protect the right of conscience of a health care professional or institution; and - Respect the right of a physician and a patient to decide treatment for the healing of that patient without interference.
Finally, in shaping public policy on access to health care, we appeal to congress for a plan that ensures basic affordable medical care for all, including legal immigrants, and a plan that protects the role of personal and private entities in carrying out their health care mission.
The bishops urge that any health care plan embraces all of these principles, and invite all Catholics to pray for all legislators that they will be enlightened by God to know what is good for our society and particularly those in need.

The U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops responds to President Obama’s speech posted: September 11, 2009
Calling it an important contribution to a crucial national debate, officials speaking on behalf of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops welcomed President Obama's September 9 address on health care reform, particularly his statements regarding abortion and the uninsured. "We agree that 'no one should go broke because they get sick,'" said Kathy Saile, Director of Domestic Social Development at the USCCB. "That's why the U.S. Bishops have worked for decades for decent health care for all.
The Catholic Church provides health care for millions, purchases health care, picks up the pieces of a failing health system, and has a long tradition of teaching on ethics in health care. Health care reform that respects the life and dignity of all is a moral imperative and urgent national priority. We welcome the President's speech as an important contribution to this essential national debate and task."

Archbishop Aymond and fmr. Archbishop Hughes’ joint statement on healthcare reform posted: August 28, 2009
The Catholic bishops in the United States recognize a pressing need for health care reform. Too many American citizens lack basic health care coverage and the cost of health care is becoming prohibitive for many more.
The Lord Jesus, who came to save us from our sins, manifested a great concern for the sick in his public ministry. He also urged us to reach out to the poor and sick in our midst. The Church rightly considers that government has a responsibility to ensure access to basic health care for all.
The bishops do not propose a specific plan or policy. But we set out the following principles to shape public policy:
- We need to develop a plan which ensures access to basic health care for all.
- We need to make sure that the poor and the vulnerable, including legal immigrants, are part of this plan.
- We need to control health care costs so that it is affordable to all.
- We need to make sure that abortion, euthanasia or other immoral activities are not mandated or financed with tax payer dollars. This includes conscience protection for all providers, whether institutions or individual persons, and for all recipients
The bishops, without proposing either a public or private sector option, urge that any plan which is developed embrace these principles. Catholics are urged to contact their United States Senators and Representative to ask them to use these principles to evaluate all proposals that are developed.
Strident or shrill rhetoric does not help us to engage in civil and respectful deliberation about a serious social issue with significant moral implications. God grant us the wisdom to discern what is right and the courage to do it.

Catholic Charities USA statement on healthcare reform posted: August 6, 2009
In response to inaccurate on line media reports, Catholic Charities USA states unequivocally that it does not support any plan to reform health care and/or any proposed legislative provision that allows or promotes the funding of abortions or that compels any health care provider or institution to provide such a service.
In fact, Catholic Charities USA will continue to work with the Catholic Health Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to ensure that any health care reform legislation will not include such provisions. All media accounts or public comments that misrepresent this position are inaccurate.
“These attacks appear to be politically motivated by opponents of health care reform. They are distortions of the truth and disingenuous. Catholic Charities USA will continue to work to reform health care in a way that is consistent with the teachings of our faith.”

Operation Helping Hands Milestone Celebration posted: April 1, 2009
For one afternoon, they laid down their hammers, paintbrushes and shovels and picked up forks and knives for a real New Orleans-style party.
150 volunteers, in New Orleans to help repair and rebuild hurricane damaged homes, were guests of honor at a party honoring not only them, but 20,000 like them who helped get the city back on its feet.

Read about former director of White House’s Faith-Based Initiatives’ commitment to Catholic Charities in New Orleans posted: March 13, 2009
From the March 23, 2009 edition of America, the national Catholic weekly:
A Covenant to Serve by John J. DiIulio, Jr.![John-DiIuliobw1[1] John-DiIuliobw1[1]](./John-DiIuliobw1_1_.jpg)
As I write this, I am two weeks away from making my 14th trip to post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. I am reflecting on how in late August 2005, four-fifths of that city was flooded when three poorly-built levees broke beneath Katrina’s blows. The resulting death and devastation made grim headlines worldwide.
So did official Washington’s shameful, almost surreal failure to rush resources to the rescue. The disaster’s predominantly African-American, low-income victims were not treated as fellow citizens. Some politicians and journalists even took to calling these suddenly homeless Americans “refugees.”
Were it not for heroics by the U.S. Coast Guard, Katrina’s initial human, property and financial toll would have been much worse. And were it not for nonprofit organizations, ranging from little local congregations to citywide operations like Catholic Charities of New Orleans, the post-Katrina recovery process would have moved even slower.
