CHILD & FAMILY SERVICES

After School Assembly ~ Fall & Spring

Tutors/Mentors:  To provide tutoring and educational outlets for children from Kindergarten to 8th grade after school from 3pm-6pm.  The program will take place at various inner city Community Centers.  Tutors are asked to commit to a minimum of 1 day per week.  Also, need volunteers in dance, yoga or other exercise skills to educate the kids.

Head Start Centers

Children’s Activities Assistants:  Teach language, music, play, interact, and supervise children, ages 3-5.  General assistance to the teachers with daily classroom activities; Monday-Friday, during school hours.

Hope Haven Center

Tutors:  Once a week commitment; weekdays or weekends.

Teaching life skills:  Book club, sewing, exercise, nutrition

Picnics/Field Day/Bingo Nights:  Coordinate/assist with activities

Independent Living Skills Program (ILSP)

Hope Chest Helpers:  Volunteers needed to sort and log in donations; Monday-Friday 9:00 AM –5:00 PM, some Saturdays possible; 3 to 4 hour shifts.

Interns:  Persons needed to assess clients; assist with class discussion, presentation, and preparation of class materials; do make-up work individually with clients; assist in activities/games; attend special meetings and/or trainings; undergraduate students welcomed; Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Therapeutic Family Services (TFS)

Sociology/Psychology Intern:  Input client tracking data and assist in evaluation of programs.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICES

Crescent House

Homework Assistance: To assist children with school work from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. weekdays, Wednesday in particular.

 

Project SAVE (Stopping Abuse through Victim Empowerment)

College Junior/Senior Volunteers:  Must be mature and committed in their interest in domestic violence.  Students will assist lawyers.

Law Student Volunteers: Current law students needed to assist lawyers in legal proceedings.

FOOD & NUTRITION

Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans & Acadiana

Sorting & Packaging Food:  Volunteers needed to work in the warehouse, reviewing food donations/expirations dates, sorting and packaging food into boxes/containers for charitable organizations that receive the food and distribute to the hungry. Times that volunteers can work is Tues-Friday from 9am to 12pm or 1-4pm.  Scheduled times on Saturdays is 9am-12pm or 12-2pm.

HEALTH CARE

ACCESS Pregnancy and Referral Centers

Baby Bottle Stuffing:  Placing fliers in baby bottles and attaching stickers for Baby Bottle Campaign.

Sociology/Social Work/Counseling Intern: To track statistics of clients and ACCESS services.  Intern also needed to assist with researching and writing grant proposals. No experience required. 

Office Assistant: To support functions of office, including data entry and general administrative duties.

Peer Counselors: To conduct pregnancy counseling for women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy.  Volunteer to do client intake, testing, and pregnancy counseling.  Forty hours of training required before volunteer placement.

HISPANIC APOSTOLATE COMMUNITY SERVICES

English as a Second Language Program

Volunteers are needed to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to immigrants in the New Orleans area.  This opportunity is a fun and interesting way to get to know new members of the community, as well as help them to adjust to their new surroundings. 

Classes will begin in late-January and continue until the beginning of May. Teachers are asked to commit to the full semester.  Teaching schedules will require a commitment of two classes a week, for two hours each class.

There are morning sessions from 9:00-11:00am and evening sessions from 6:30-8:30pm.  Positions are available in Uptown (Tulane University), Mid-City (Worker Resource Center and Esperanza School), Metairie (Atonement Lutheran Church), Mandeville (Causeway Branch Library), and Slidell (St. Margaret Mary Church).

There will be a mandatory 6-hour training in January.  The training dates are January 12th for the NorthShore and January 19th for the South Shore.  Both are from 9am to 4pm.

 

It is not required to speak any language other than English.

SENIORS

Adult Day Health Care Centers

Musical/Art/Entertaining: Sing, play music or teach basic art to seniors. 

Companion & Bingo Volunteers:  Sit, talk, listen, and read to clients.  Help with Bingo.

Painting/Cleaning volunteers: Sweep, clean, and paint facilities as needed.

 

Foster Grandparents

Limited income seniors age 60 and over are needed to serve as caregivers, mentors and tutors for children with exceptional needs.  Foster Grandparents receive a stipend, assistance with cost of transportation, meals during service time and other benefits.  Also need volunteer speakers to provide information to Foster Grandparents on Nutrition, Finance and other enlightening topics.
