Child & Family Services

After School Assembly
Tutors/Mentors: Provide tutoring and educational outlets for children from kindergarten to 8th grade after school from 3 PM - 5:30 PM during the fall and spring. The program will take place at various inner city community centers. Tutors are asked to commit to a minimum of 1 day per week. Also, volunteers experienced in dance, yoga or other exercise are needed to share their skill with the students.

Gert Town Community Center
Volunteers needed to help unload food boxes from truck and possible delivery to clients. Third Monday of every month at 7:30 AM.

Head Start Centers
Children’s Activities Assistants: Teach language, music, play, interact, and supervise children, ages 3-5. General assistance to the teachers with daily classroom activities; Monday-Friday, during school hours.

Incarnate Word Adult Education Center

Computer Literacy: To teach basic computer literacy classes on Friday mornings in the Carrollton area of New Orleans.

Independent Living Skills Program (ILSP)
Hope Chest Helpers: Sort and log in donations; Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9 AM –5 PM, 3 to 4 hour shifts.

Life Skills: Professionals to speak about basic life skills, including how to search for jobs, balance a checkbook, set up an apartment on a budget, etc. Classes are held on weeknights.

Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center
Homework Assistance: To assist children with school work on Saturdays from 10 AM - 2 PM.

Domestic Violence Services

Crescent House
Homework Assistance: Assist children with school work from 4 PM - 7 PM weekdays, Monday and Wednesday in particular.

Dinner Volunteer: Serve, prepare, or provide dinner to a group of approximately 40 clients and their children on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Project SAVE (Stopping Abuse through Victim Empowerment)
College Junior/Senior Volunteers:
Students will assist lawyers. Must be mature and have a committed interest in domestic violence.

Law Student Volunteers: Current law students needed to assist lawyers in legal proceedings.

Faith-Based Initiatives

Parish Social Ministry
For those looking to begin or expand social ministries within their Catholic parish.  The Office of Justice and Peace can work with your parish leadership to develop a comprehensive vision of parish social ministry, including, but not limited to: Catholic Social Teaching education through the JustFaith program, community organizing through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, direct service opportunities through Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul, legislative advocacy, and global solidarity activities through Catholic Relief Services.

JustFaith Facilitators
Adult volunteers needed to facilitate the 2010-2011 JustFaith program.  JustFaith seeks to form a community based in prayer that nourishes each participant on their journey of faith that does justice.  Throughout the sessions, the group reads books, watches videos, and hears from speakers that highlight Catholic Social Teaching.  Facilitators commit to 30 weekly sessions, beginning September 2010.  No experience or theological training necessary.

Food & Nutrition

Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans & Acadiana
General:
Volunteers are needed year-round to assist with various activities, which include sorting and packing food, special events, food delivery and pick-ups, and office assistance. Volunteer shifts for sorting and packing food are available throughout the year Tuesday - Saturday (with the exception of all major holidays). Volunteers can work Tuesday - Friday from 9 AM - 12 PM and/or 1 PM - 4 PM. Volunteers can work on Saturdays from 9 AM - 12 PM and or 12 PM - 2 PM. Volunteer groups must have a minimum of 8 people but no more than 25 to sort and pack food.

Clerical:
To assist with the functions of office - update client resources, write thank you notes for fundraiser, mail merge, stuff baby bottles, copy forms and assemble packets. Computer skills are necessary. Volunteer will assist and interact with staff and will have no client contact. Four hours per week as needed.

Hispanic Apostolate Community Services

English as a Second Language Program
Enthusiastic volunteers are needed to teach English as a Second Language classes to non-native English speakers in the Greater New Orleans area.

This is a rewarding opportunity that is fun and an interesting way to get to know new members of our diverse community, as well as help them adjust to their new surroundings.

Classes will begin in September and continue until the beginning of December. Teachers are asked to commit to the full semester--two classes per week, for two hours each class. There are morning sessions from 9:00-11:00 and evening sessions from 6:30-8:30pm. 

Positions are available in Uptown (Tulane University), Mid-City (afternoon classes at the Esperanza Charter School/morning classes at Carrollton Church of Christ), Metairie (Atonement Lutheran Church), Mandeville (Causeway Branch Library), and the West Bank (location TBA).

It is not required that you speak any language other than English.

Seniors

Adult Day Health Care Centers
Musical/Art/Entertaining: Sing, play music or teach basic art to seniors. Piano players are especially needed.

Companion & Bingo: Sit, talk, listen, and read to clients. Help with Bingo.

Painting/Cleaning: Sweep, clean, and paint facilities as needed.

Foster Grandparents
Limited income seniors age 60 and over are needed to serve as caregivers, mentors and tutors for children with exceptional needs. Foster Grandparents receive a stipend, assistance with cost of transportation, meals during service time and other benefits. Also need volunteer speakers to provide information to Foster Grandparents on Nutrition, Finance and other informative topics.
