CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNOUNCES POST-KATRINA SUCCESSES AND THREE-YEAR PLAN
Since Hurricane Katrina’s horrific landfall in August 2005, Catholic Charities has been in the forefront of the faith-based recovery effort in the Greater New Orleans area. Through new initiatives in housing, mental health and case management, Catholic Charities has touched more than 700,000 lives in the months following the storm.
Catholic Charities has contributed to the healing of our region:
- Catholic Charities has distributed $4.3 million in direct assistance.
- Through Operation Helping Hands, 5,533 local, national and international volunteers have gutted 934 homes for elderly or disabled storm victims. This amounts to about 150,733 hours of service.
- Catholic Charities has provided support services and case management to 22,212 clients in 14 community centers located in St. Tammany, St. Bernard, Jefferson and Orleans parishes.
- Through Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, Catholic Charities has distributed 56,603,542 pounds of food to those who would otherwise go hungry.
Catholic Charities remains committed to the vibrant future of New Orleans , and has identified five key areas that will contribute to the success of the region. Catholic Charities has incorporated these areas into a 3 year plan for the future:
Response & Recovery
- Provide case management to 20,000 families and individuals.
- Support those in need with $7,000,000 in direct assistance.
Housing
- In conjunction with our partners…
- Repair and rebuild 2,400 homes and apartments
- Develop and build 1,200 new homes
- Develop and build 3,400 new apartments
- Provide housing with health care and support services to 2,500 individuals with special needs: developmentally disabled children and adults; abused, neglected and emotionally disturbed children; battered women; homeless women, children, and families; chronically mentally ill; persons living with AIDS.
Health Care
Food and Nutrition
- Supply 177,000,000 pounds of food to hungry families and agencies that feed the hungry across our metro region and state.
- Feed a minimum of 960,000 persons.
Mental Health
- Provide crisis intervention and counseling to 200,000 individuals.
- Provide clinical counseling to 6,000 individuals.
- Provide counseling in Catholic schools to 20,000 children, parents and faculty.
Physical Care
- In conjunction with our partners…
- Provide medical care to 20,780 individuals
Education
- Provide early childhood education to 1,800 children.
- Provide after-school and summer education to 4,600 children.
- Provide life skills and adult education services to 1,700 teens and young adults.
Economic Development
- Provide job training, placement and development for 3,000 individuals.
