ST. VINCENT MATERNITY CLINIC’S DARLEEN CRANE RANKS AMONG THE TOP NURSES IN LOUISIANA

(New Orleans, LA) – Darleen Crane, R.N., Director of Catholic Charities St. Vincent Maternity Clinic, was recently honored as one of the Great 100 Nurses in Louisiana according to American Nursing Services, Inc.

Crane received the award because of her deep dedication to helping low-income women have healthy pregnancies and safe, affordable deliveries. And, while St. Vincent’s function is primarily rooted in health services, Crane goes out of her way to help her patients by way of providing referrals, education and whatever else she can give.

“She takes an ‘at-risk’ mother-to-be and turns her into a caring, knowledgeable, responsible parent,” said Kay Bongard, Director of ACCESS PRC, another pregnancy program of Catholic Charities. “She never sacrifices time with her patients and does all of her paperwork on her own time.”

After Hurricane Katrina, Crane’s commitment to her vocation was especially strong. Though she suffered great personal hardships, she headed to Baton Rouge to offer whatever support she could to Catholic Charities temporary operations and early response there. When she could return to Metairie, she helped clean up ACCESS Centers and the St. Vincent Maternity Clinic while suffering from a broken elbow.

Now that operations have resumed, Crane continues to give the most personal, holistic care possible to her patients. “Every time I’ve witnessed her tenderness and loving care for each patient that comes to the clinic, I’m amazed at the effort she has put forth for all these years,” Bongard said.

Catholic Charities St. Vincent Maternity Clinic provides affordable, private medical care, education and counseling to low and moderate income women during pregnancy. It also provides delivery and up to a three day stay at Touro Infirmary. The Clinic accepts Medicaid and is a Medicaid application center.
