Learn about the Program

Operation Helping brings volunteers from across the country together to help rebuild New Orleans by rebuilding homes of elderly, disabled or uninsured homeowners. The flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina severely damaged as many as 200,000 homes in the Greater New Orleans area. Hurricane Rita's effects exacerbated the damage already done by Katrina.

The first phase of our project was comprised of gutting homes to remove and remediate the debris, mold and ruined belongings within. We have• gutted about 2,000 residences since November 2005, when Operation Helping Hands was started.

OHH Volunteers - Exterior Painting

Now we are beginning to rebuild the homes we have gutted. We are helping homeowners by doing limited electrical and plumming work, hanging sheetrock, painting and landscaping. We are also helping homeowners to navigate the often intimidating process of finding reputable contractors and filling out paperwork.

If you need help, or know someone who does, please call (504) 895-5439 for assistance.
