Catholic Charities Domestic Violence Services Shoots for Awareness
In the reality of living in New Orleans post-Katrina, the specter of crime remains ever-present. Murders, drugs trafficking and muggings seem worse than ever. These crimes, which are usually or at least often reported, show up much more on society’s radar than more silent and unreported crimes like domestic violence.
To raise awareness for this social problem that, by experts’ estimates, has skyrocketed post-Katrina, Catholic Charities Domestic Violence Services will hold a free 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Audubon Park on Saturday, April 21. This Crime Victims Rights Awareness Week event will be held in conjunction with a 5K & 1 mile fun run called “Moving Forward,” sponsored by the French Quarter Business Women’s Network and the New Orleans chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. Proceeds from the $15 run/walk will benefit Catholic Charities Crescent House, Lindy’s Place and the FQBWN Scholarship Fund. Free food, prizes, and live music featuring Hot 8 Brass Band will also be featured.
“This problem is not going to get better until people are aware that it is an issue that completely cuts through socio-economic and racial backgrounds,” Mary Claire Landry, Director of Domestic Violence Services for Catholic Charities, said. “It doesn’t matter what gender you are, what age you are, or what you do for a living.”
