Catholic Charities Encourages Local Volunteers to go "Back to Volunteering"
Since Hurricane Katrina, New Orleanians have benefitted from the hard work of volunteers from across the country. Catholic Charities is now making a push for volunteers from the New Orleans community to lend a hand in the recovery. The volunteer campaign has been dubbed “Back to Volunteering” to encourage school students as well as adults to come back into the fold.
“Volunteers will be able to participate in different ways according to their area of interest,” Shannon Murphy, Director of Volunteers, said. “After Hurricane Katrina, we were really funneling all of our volunteers into the Operation Helping Hands house gutting program.” Now, local volunteers can still help rebuild a house, but if they’re too saturated with their own hurricane recovery, they can read a story to children in our Head Start centers, take care of administrative tasks for Catholic Charities programs, or teach an ESL [English as a Second Language] class.
In conjunction with this campaign to recruit on the local level, Catholic Charities also plans to hold several volunteer orientations to keep everyone educated about what their duties will be. These orientations will be held in early fall: September 13, September 26, October 10 and October 22 at 6:00 PM at 1000 Howard Avenue in New Orleans.
College and high school students can earn internship credit and/or service hours for volunteering with a Catholic Charities program.
Please visit Catholic Charities Volunteering on the web at www.ccano.org/registration.htm for potential volunteer projects. Email volunteer@archdiocese-no.org or call (504) 310-6961 if you have any questions.
