Editorial: A Worthy Appeal

It's hard to overstate the demand charitable organizations have faced since Hurricane Katrina to assist people across the metro area.

Residents across the region have responded with an outpouring of donations and volunteer work, and the New Orleans Archdiocese is counting on them for this year's Archbishop's Community Appeal.

The annual fund-raising effort, which runs from September through December, is seeking to raise $1.7 million this year.

The campaign, founded four decades ago by then-Archbishop Philip Hannan, has raised millions of dollars for a vast array of services -- from relief efforts after Hurricane Betsy to housing to AIDS counseling.

With the help of residents across the region, last year's campaign surpassed its goal of $1.25 million. Catholic Charities distributes the money collected to a variety of community programs.

But people can help with more than just checks. Every year, thousands of volunteers have donated their time to help their neighbors in a wide variety of programs sponsored by Catholic Charities.

As our recovery continues, the needs surely will remain great. Fortunately, so will the generosity of New Orleanians.
