Victims’ advocates say recession contributes to domestic violence

As the recession hits closer to home in Louisiana, battered women shelters say more men are hitting their wives and girlfriends. Officials with New Orleans Catholic Charities say economics is often a factor in cases they handle.

Pam Albers with New Orleans Catholic Charities says money is often a source of friction in a troubled relationship, so a recession can make a bad situation even worse.

"Add those extra stressors to a relationship that already may not have been good in the first place, and the violence escalates from there," she said. Albers said that also makes it tougher for some women to make the decision to get out, for fear she can't get a job to support herself or her children.

"That is always a factor in why a woman may make a decision to stay in her relationship," said Albers. "It's always economic, at least part of it is."
