Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans issues plans for social services, justice initiatives

The Archdiocese, Catholic Charities and Religious Congregations in the Archdiocese are committed to providing the critical services and social justice initiatives necessary to help our local communities recover and rebuild.

Services provided throughout the archdiocese:

• Catholic Charities clinical counseling services for individuals, couples and families are available throughout the Archdiocese.

• Catholic Charities 1-800 support services are available throughout the Archdiocese.

• Catholic Charities domestic violence support services (Crescent House, Project Save) are available throughout the Archdiocese.

• Catholic Charities prolife services, including pregnancy counseling and maternity support services, are available throughout the Archdiocese.

• Catholic Charities post-Katrina home rebuilding services (Operation Helping Hands) are available throughout the Archdiocese with a focus on the most devastated areas.

• Catholic Charities services for special needs populations are available throughout the Archdiocese. These include services for: homeless (Care Centers), chronically mentally ill (Ciara House), developmentally disabled children and adults (Padua), abused and neglected children (Hope Haven, Therapeutic Foster Care), frail elderly (Adult Day Health Centers), hearing impaired (Deaf Action Center), immigrants and refugees.

• Catholic Charities food assistance is available through its Second Harvest Food Bank and Food for Families programs covering the Archdiocese of New Orleans and reaching all 64 civil parishes in Louisiana.

• Catholic Charities Emergency Management Department works with each parish in the Archdiocese in disaster planning and emergency response.

 

Services in each of the 12 deaneries of the Archdiocese:

I. Cathedral Deanery

• Catholic Charities PACE program at St. Cecilia Church has expanded its services to include a community health center in partnership with the Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans. Plans include further expansion of the health center.

• Catholic Charities Summer Witness youth program will be held at St. Peter Claver Parish and Cathedral Academy.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with Cathedral Academy.

• Catholic Charities will develop a community center in the Tremé neighborhood of St. Peter Claver Parish in partnership with Providence Community Housing. This center will include both health and social services and a Head Start education program.

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: St. Louis Cathedral, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Corpus Christi and St. Augustine.

• Christopher Homes and Providence Community Housing will begin renovating St. Martin Manor senior residence this summer.

• Christopher Homes’ Christopher Inn senior residence is open and operational.

• Christopher Homes and Providence began renovating Annunciation Inn senior residence this January.

• The Marianites of Holy Cross will provide outreach ministries at Holy Angels, networking with the Deanery and Catholic Charities programs in the surrounding areas.

• Catholic Charities Community Center at St. Mary of the Angels will re-open as soon as possible. Catholic Charities will continue to seek funding for this.

• St. Jude Community Center, in collaboration with the Lindy Boggs Literacy Center at Loyola University, Benedict the Moor schools.

• Catholic Charities Community Center will remain open at St. Gabriel.

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: St. James Major and

St. Pius X.

• Christopher Homes and Providence and the Holy Family Sisters will begin renovating St. John Berchmans senior residence this spring.

 

III. Uptown Deanery

• Catholic Charities will provide a Head Start education program at Incarnate Word Community Center. The bilingual Head Start program, in place for 45 years at the El YoYo Head Start Center, will continue.

• Catholic Charities Summer Witness youth program will be held at St. Joan of Arc.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with the Deanery and Catholic Charities, will provide a family literacy program, social services and job placement.

 

II. City Park-Gentilly Deanery

• Catholic Charities is working to develop a community center at the closed St. Rose de Lima parish that will include both health and social services to the Hispanic community.

• Catholic Charities is working with an inter-faith group to develop the Lake Area Community Center to provide adult day health care, youth and after school programs, child care, health and wellness, a community kitchen and meeting rooms and continuing education and craft programs for adults.

• Catholic Charities plans to have a Summer Witness youth program at St. Leo the Great.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with St. Leo the Great and St. Joan of Arc School and with the Seton Resource Center of the Daughters of Charity Services at St. Rita School.

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: St. Joan of Arc, St. Rita and St. Stephen.

• Catholic Charities at the Gert Town Community Center will continue providing an After-School tutoring program and social services to the community.

• Catholic Charities at Incarnate Word Community Center will continue providing Head Start, social services to the community, and an ESL program in consultation with the Hispanic Apostolate.

• Christopher Homes’ Mater Dolorosa senior residence is open and operational.

• Chateau de Notre Dame Nursing Home and senior residence is open and operational.

 

IV. Inner City Deanery

• Catholic Charities at St. John the Baptist Community Center will continue providing Head Start education and social services to the community.

• Catholic Charities Summer Witness youth program will be held at St. Alphonsus.

• Catholic Charities After-School tutoring program is held at St. John the Baptist Community Center.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with the Seton Resource Center of the Daughters of Charity Services at St. Alphonsus School and St. Anthony of Padua School.

• St. Joseph parish will continue to operate the St. Joseph Rebuild Center and its ministry in social services to the homeless and housing in the mid-city area in collaboration with the Vincentians, The Presentation Sisters, The Harry Thompson Center, and Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities at St. John the Baptist Community Center will continue its social services and education ministries.

 

VII. West Bank Deanery

• Catholic Charities will expand the PACE program services for the frail elderly in partnership with the Archdiocesan elderly services of Wynhoven Apartments and Wynhoven Health Care Center.

• Catholic Charities will continue its services to abused and neglected children at Hope Haven on the Wynhoven campus.

• Catholic Charities Summer Witness youth program will be held at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego.

• Catholic Charities at its Hope Haven Community Center will continue to provide social services for the West Bank Deanery and the Algiers-Plaquemines Deanery.

• Catholic Charities After-School tutoring program is held at Hope Haven Community Center.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with St. Anthony School in Gretna, Our Lady of Prompt Succor School in Westwego, and with the Seton Resource Center of the Daughters of Charity Services at Immaculate Conception School in Marrero.

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: St. Anthony in Lafitte/St. Pius X in Crown Point and St. Rosalie.

• Christopher Homes’ Wynhoven senior residence is open and operational. Wynhoven Nursing Home is open and operational.

VIII. Algiers-Plaquemines

Deanery

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with Holy Name of Mary School in Algiers.

• Catholic Charities at its Hope Haven Community center will continue to provide social services for the West Bank Deanery and the Algiers-Plaquemines Deanery.

 

IX. St. Bernard Deanery

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: Holy Ghost/St. Francis de Sales, Immaculate Conception, St. Alphonsus and St. Joseph/St. Patrick.

• St. Alphonsus, under the leadership of the Sisters of Mercy and the Redemptorists, will continue its ministry to seniors, providing social services to the community, networking with Catholic Charities.

 

V. East Jefferson Deanery

• Catholic Charities will provide social services through its Community center at St. Jerome Parish.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program will be in partnership with the Seton Resource Center of the Daughters of Charity Services at St. Francis Xavier School.

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: Our Lady of Divine Providence/St. Lawrence the Martyr, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Agnes, St. Clement of Rome and St. Francis

Xavier.

• Christopher Homes’ Metairie Manor senior residence is open and operational.

 

VI. St. John-St. Charles Deanery

• Catholic Charities Summer Witness youth program will be held at a St. John Parish Public School - Mt. Airy Magnet School in Garyville.

• Catholic Charities will provide social services through its St. Charles regional office and St. John regional office.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program will be in partnership with St. Peter School in Reserve.

• Catholic Charities Parish Based-Direct Assistance is available at the following parish: Our Lady of Grace in Reserve.

• Christopher Homes’ Place Dubourg senior residence open and operational. Center will provide social services.

• Catholic Charities at its St. Bernard counseling center will provide family and individual counseling services.

• Catholic Charities Parish-Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Chalmette, St. Thomas in Pointe a la Hache, Assumption of Our Lady Mission in Braithwaite and Our Lady of Lourdes in Violet.

• Christopher Homes and Providence are exploring rebuilding/replacing St. Bernard senior residence, and Villa St. Maurice senior residence.

 

X. West St. Tammany-Washington Deanery

• Catholic Charities Summer Witness youth program will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Franklinton and at a second site in partnership with Christ Episcopal Church in Covington. Catholic Charities After-School tutoring program will be held at Holy Family Church in Franklinton.

• Catholic Charities social services will be provided through its Holy Family Community Center.

• Catholic Charities Parish Based-Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: Holy Family, St. John the Baptist in Folsom, St. Jane de Chantal in Abita Springs and St. Peter in Covington.

• Christopher Homes’ Rouquette Lodge senior residence is open and operational.

 

XI. New Orleans East Deanery

• Catholic Charities plans to have a Summer Witness youth program at Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in New Orleans East.

• Catholic Charities Parish- Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: Mary Queen of Vietnam, Resurrection of Our Lord, St. Paul the Apostle and St. Maria Goretti.

• Christopher Homes and Providence began renovating Nazareth I and II senior residences this January, and together with the Holy Family Sisters, will begin on Delille Inn this spring.

 

XII. East St. Tammany-Washington Deanery

• Catholic Charities plans to have a Summer Witness youth program at Annunciation Church in Bogalusa.

• Catholic Charities plans to have an After-School tutoring program at Annunciation Church in Bogalusa.

• Catholic Charities will provide social services through Community Centers at Annunciation and St. Luke the Evangelist parishes.

• Catholic Charities Catholic School Counseling program is in partnership with Annunciation School in Bogalusa.

• Catholic Charities Parish- Based Direct Assistance is available at the following parishes: Annunciation in Bogalusa; Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Genevieve, St. Luke the Evangelist and St. Margaret Mary in Slidell; and St. John of the Cross in Lacombe.
